The Fall Festival was a blast. Once again a hearty thank you to our Ladies Auxiliary for pulling off another successful event. The kids (and adults) all had plenty to do with different games and events sponsored by our various veterans’ organizations. I believe the dunking booth was the most popular, it continued for over 6 hours. Yours truly enjoyed it, but that was the longest half hour I have ever spent. That water was COLD.

We will be closed Nov. 30th in observance of Thanksgiving.

Joe Paschal will be holding a Hunter Safety course on Nov. 3rd, 4th and 5th at 1800, here at the post.

Don’t forget the Veteran’s Day Parade, Nov 8. If you want to participate, meet here at the post at 0800. We will depart at 0900 for the parade. Then we will return to the post at approx. 1130 for light snacks and a couple of speeches by the VA rep. and others. We are looking for a great turnout. A lot of work and planning by Charlie Claybourn and The Forsyth County Veteran’s Org. has gone into this. Let’s all show our support, come to the parade.

ALR Homeless Veterans ride is Nov. 16. Contributions will be appreciated. See a member.

Due to economics, and the ever-increasing costs of everything, we have decided that the Monday dollar beer sales will be cancelled

Due to economics, and the ever-increasing costs of everything, we have decided that the Monday dollar beer sales will be cancelled.  I know that this will upset some folks, but we can see no alternative to doing it. With the cost of beer, gas food and just about every other thing, it just makes good sense. This is effective Oct. 1.

The yard sale was a success, even with the rain many people came out and it seemed everyone had a good time. Thank you Ladies Auxiliary, the supporting husbands and significant others.

The Homeless Veterans Cookout was a lot of fun and quite enjoyable. Larry Starling and Susan Temples, along with other girls and guys provided a great service to the folks. Also our own Billy Mitchell is back in town. Billy is in an assisted living place in Clemmons. Welcome home Billy.

Good news, the large hall air conditioning is back on line. We have a new unit on the roof. Thanks to Lewis Pleasants for his source.

Mark your calendars for a BIG and FUN day, FALL FESTIVAL, 1200-1900, October 25, here at the post. Bring the family, bring the kids, there will be games, dunking booth, jumping thingy’s and other types of entertainment for all. Promises to be a good time for all ages. Come out and have a great time.

We now have an ATM in the canteen for your convenience.

The roof at the legion has been replaced, thanks to Jeff Hufford and Ken Lewis, also thanks to Ron Palm for arraigning crane service thru a friend of his. We hope to have a new a/c within the next week installed; this cools down the large hall.

The canteen is coming along. You may have noticed there are some changes in furniture and other arrangements. Wayne & Robin Reid, Ken & Wendie Lewis and Sam & Anna Dillard have been busy with their ideas and expertise. Everything promises to look great.

Next dinner meeting we will have Boy’s/Girl’s State participants here to tell of their experience(s). Plan on joining us.

Now is the time to renew 09 Legion dues. Send them in and Charles Evans will take care of it.

Thank you and a job well done to all involved

Thank you and a job well done to all involved. This is to include the SAL, American Legion, ALR, Ladies Auxiliary and anyone else. The “Roast” for “Big” Rick Hall was a tremendous success and all of these folks deserve one “HUGE ATTA - BOY” I know Rick was very happy and surprised at the turnout of old school friends, family and his legion buddies. Bear had a great time, gained 10 pounds.

A BIG THANK YOU to Ken Lewis for the construction and donation of the new POW/MIA platform in the canteen. This is quite a centerpiece and very special to all. It is a fitting tribute to the many POW/MIA’S still unaccounted for. Thank you Ken from all of us!

The canteen has been painted and plans are in the works for more improvements. Thanks to Don Anderson, Ken Lewis and Jeff Hufford for their time and help. Anybody have any ideas? Let hear them.

We had a good turn out at Charlie Claybourn’s on the 26th. A ton of wood was cut and a lot of brush piled up. I understand there is more to be done, we will pass the word when another working party is to be planned. Thanks guys!

We had some severe damage done to the roof of the post due to the storm of last week. Work is underway to fix and correct the damage. Thanks to all that helped in the clean up and removal of water and debris. It happened on “bike night” and we were lucky to have folks here. The large hall is without air conditioning. It seems that the unit on the roof was also damaged. Please bear with us, we will get it fixed asap.

There will be no Joint Dinner Meeting in August. In September we will have our representatives from Boy’s and Girl’s State here to talk about their experiences.

Special thanks, to Jeff Huffod for his contribution of lumber. We built a new shed and Jeff donated the lumber to frame it out.

The Frogmore Stew and Luau were great, I believe everyone that came was not only surprised but also had an enjoyable and fun time. Thanks so much to Larry Starling, Charles Evans, Willie Craven and Lewis Pleasants once again for their help and input. Also, Thanks to Anna Dillard, Robin Reid , Jennie Evans and Missy Craven for their setting up and pulling off a very enjoyable Luau.

The Legion camping trip was a tremendous amount of fun. There were 23 of us that went to Maggie Valley on Thursday and Friday. Some shopped, some went to the casino at Cherokee, (and lost) and some that hung around the campground. We had a great cookout Saturday evening and a surprise birthday party for Susan. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUSAN!!!.

The ALR “Poker Run” on the 28th came off well. I heard that approx. $1300.00 was raised to help “Big” Rick. On a sad note, there was one biker that had and accident and was injured quite seriously. I’m not sure of his name, he was from Mt Airy. Please, let’s keep this fellow in our thoughts and prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.

Elections were held at the last dinner meeting. Listed above are the new officers for the coming year. Congratulations to all, please show your support for all in the coming year. Let us all do what we can for a great post, great members and a great board. Also, thanks to the members that came off the board, your contributions were invaluable.

Congratulations to Robin Reid and Wendie Lewis. New Auxiliary President and Vice- President. Also, to the rest of the ladies, old and new. I know we will continue to have a great Auxiliary. I personally want to thank Susan Temples, out going Ladies Aux. President for a job well done. Susan has contributed more to the post than anyone in my recent memory. She was always coming to me with ideas and suggestions on what we could do to improve our post for the members. She has incorporated some great programs, functions and just plain old fun things. From all of us at Post 55. THANK YOU SUSAN!!

The State Convention is June 13 - 15, in Raleigh. See Charles Evans or myself if you are planning on going. Post will pay for one night lodging.

Camping at Maggie Valley, June 20 -21. Sites have been set aside & motels are available near by. Robin Reid and Jennie Evans have info. Looks to be a great weekend. Fishing, attractions or just plain ole relaxing. Come & join us.

Memorial Day weekend was relaxing and rewarding. There was a free cookout at the post on Sunday, thanks to Larry Starling, Lewis Pleasants and Charles Evans for the cooking and the help. On Saturday we placed a wreath and held a small ceremony at Clyde Bolling’s grave, then we went to Parklawn Memorial Gardens and placed 300 flags on veteran’s graves, along with a small ceremony.
The Legion Color Guard participated in a Memorial Day ceremony at Freeman Street Baptist Church Sunday AM. Then we participated in the ceremonies at Ernie Shore Field on Monday, along with the Veterans Burial Guard.

June 28,the ALR is planning a “Poker Run” bike ride for “Big” Rick Hall. As you know, Rick has cancer and we want to help and honor him in any way we can.

Luau on June 7. Starts at 1600 and tickets are on sale in the canteen for $5.00. I wasn’t here for the last one, but I heard a great time was had by all. Backgroud island music. Wear those loud shirts and come out for a good time.

We have lost a couple of members. Gene Owens, Legionnaire and ALR member and Booker T. Williams, Legionnaire and FRA member passed away this past month. Our thoughts and prayers go to their families.

Nominations for the new board are as follows: Commander – Jud Lamphear, 1st Vice – Larry Starling, 2nd Vice – Don Anderson, Adjutant – Charles Evans, Finance – Bill Werner, Judge Adv. - Lewis Pleasants, Historian – Dewey Holt, Chaplain - Willie Craven, Service Off - James Barkley, Sgt @ Arms- Wayne Reid, 3rd year Exec – Bill Temples. Nominations and elections will be finalized at May dinner meeting. If there are more to be nominated, please do so at meeting.

We had a great fish fry on the 27th. Thanks so much to Lewis Pleasants for furnishing the fish and also for doing the cooking, Willie Craven was an able helper. Thanks also to Larry Starling for his help in preparing, and Charles Evans for doing the fries and hush puppies.
It is saddening though, that more people did not turn out for the fish fry, a lot of work went into this and there were plenty of notices that went out informing all of the event. Please, remember this is your post and we can’t make it without your support. We are trying to have different functions throughout the year, while at the same time trying to keep everyone happy.

Do to the lack of interest and participation, it has been decided to eliminate the Bloody Mary Breakfast. The attendance was lacking and it was decided to stop. Look for special occasion breakfasts.

District 18 meeting on May 10 @ King, NC. @ 1000.

Saturday May 24 we will be going to Salem Cemetery to place a flag on Clyde Bollings grave. We will then go to Parklawn Memorial Gardens to place 200-300 flags on veteran’s graves. Need volunteers to help place these flags. Please notify via e-mail, phone etc if you are interested. We will meet at 0900 at the legion and depart from there. We will also need help on Tuesday the 27th to remove the flags at Parklawn . Please help; let’s do what we can to honor our veteran’s.

Ladies Auxiliary will de handing out Poppies on Friday, May 23. Anyone who would like to help, see Susan Temples or contact the post.

YOU MISSED IT!!! SHAME,SHAME,SHAME!! The Reverse Drawing was a tremendous success and all of those in attendance appeared to have a great time. Whole Foods outdid themselves with an excellent selection of food, and huge quantities. There was so much food that folks took home what they wanted and we were still able to donate to the Samaritan Inn. Tom Dunn as usual provided and excellent selection of music and karaoke. We had 4 winners that split the $1000.00 prize.

Nominations for 2008 board will be held at the April dinner meeting. If you are interested, or know of someone that might be interested in becoming an officer of the post, please bring it up at the meeting.

Plans are to put flags on veterans graves this Memorial Day. We are looking to do this at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. We will need help to do this, more information to follow. The Ladies Auxiliary and the Post will coordinate.

No board meeting in April.

The Super Bowl Party was great, good attendance, great food and a wonderful opportunity for many of us to be together to watch some excellent football. Hope your team won.

The Sweetheart Steak Dinner had an excellent turnout; the steaks were great and the entertainment (Patsy Cline) was super. Thanks to Robin Reid & Anna Dillard for planning, decorating and serving, Charles and Jenny Evans for salad and potatoes, Hanna Reynolds for keeping up the food supplies, Joe & Jerry Paschal for the banana pudding and Sam Dillard, Wayne Reid and Larry Starling for cooking the steaks. You guys did a great job and all had a wonderful time.

By now you all have received the “plea” about the Reverse Drawing. Let’s all do what we can to make this event a success. In addition to advance purchase of tickets, they will also be available at the door the night of the event.

We are in the “planning” stages of re-doing the canteen and possibly adding improvements to the large hall. We want to provide areas in the large hall for the different “units” in the post, i.e. Ladies Aux., SAL, and ALR etc. By areas we mean. Hanging plaques, awards, mementoes etc. in designated areas, anything that is hung would be protected by a plexi-glass enclosure. We have some great ideas for the canteen. Nothing has been done in this area for years and it is felt that we need to up-grade and improve on our post. Any ideas or contributing factors will be greatly appreciated.

REMINDER: Effective February 1, bar prices increase. Due to rising costs of everything, we have to raise our beverage sales. This is a minimal increase to help offset our expenses. Increases are posted in canteen. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

December has been a great month for giving. The Marine Corps League collected a ton of toys for the “Toys for Tots’ Program. The Ladies Auxiliary had Santa at the post for the kids. There were over 30 children that were able to visit Santa and receive a gift. We also had an open house following Santa. The ALR had their 3rd Annual VA Hospital Christmas ride on the 15th and a Christmas ride to the Children’s Home in Lexington on the 16th. I was fortunate to be able to “ride” in the ALR Christmas Ride to the VA Home In Salisbury on the 15th. Over $9,000 was presented to the VA. What a wonderful experience. A tremendous amount of work went into the organization and planning of all these worthwhile events. Our hats are off to all of you involved. Also, Post 55 presented a check for $1380 to Ronald McDonald House from the collection of pull-tabs.
I hope all had a very Merry Christmas and I wish for each of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Without each and every one of you, we might as well close the doors.

You missed a GREAT party. Thanks again ladies!!!!

We had quite a treat at the last Joint Dinner Meeting. Our Ladies Auxiliary hosted a special thanks to our veterans. Joyce Stewart and Gerri Paschal provided entertainment A wonderful meal was provided and door prizes were given out. We are fortunate to have such an active Auxiliary; these ladies are truly and asset to our Post. They are always coming up with different ideas for activities or ways to help with the betterment of the Post. Our hats are off to you Ladies of the Auxiliary, thank you so much for what you do and what you provide.

If you have not had the opportunity to check out the “HALL of HONOR”, please do so. Here is the chance to recognize your self, a friend or a loved one. It only costs $50.00 to buy a brick; order forms are available in the canteen. Another great idea from our ladies.

Thanks to our LEGION GIRLS, Brittney Hinsdale and Erin Freeman. The flag on the fence has been refurbished for Veterans Day. This gesture from the girls has meant so much to the members of the post

Those that missed the September Joint dinner Meeting, I’m sorry. We had three outstanding young men and one young woman as our guests, they told us of their experiences at this years Boys/Girls State. If these young folks are any example of our future leaders, then our country has nothing to worry about. One young man, Brent Macon, was selected for Boys Nation in Washington, DC, only 90 are selected from across the country. This is quite an honor and this is the second year that a delegate from Post 55 has been selected. Way to go Winston-Salem Schools and thanks for the good work Gabe and Dwayne.

I have been sending weekly e-mails on up coming events, if you have any thing to go out, let me know.

Check the calendar, we have some good stuff coming up and hope you all will show up and participate. Remember, we are doing this for you!

I apologize for the lack of a newsletter. We had a problem with the hard drive, it died, and therefore it has taken us awhile for us to get back into action.
There have been some exciting things going on at the post. On August 25 the Ladies Auxiliary had a Luau here at the post, I wasn’t able to attend but all I have heard is positive replies. Everyone had a great time. This past Sunday we had a cookout and this also was greatly attended and all had a goodtime.
Up-coming event are to include: 9/11 Steak roast, 9/15 @ 0900 “Bloody Mary Breakfast”, 10/14 Chili Cook off, signup and info to follow, 10/20 Rolling Thunder Spaghetti Supper, tickets $10.00, on sale in canteen.
We will be presenting our 2007 Boy’s and Girl’s State attendees at this months Joint Dinner Meeting. The Post had 10 boys to attend and the Ladies had two girls.
Thanks to Bob Penn and Rolling Thunder for their generous donation. $150.00 was donated to the Post from the proceeds of the Rolling Thunder yard sale. Thanks guys.
Bob Dancy is making ashtrays, these are quite unique and can be seen in the canteen. He is selling them for $5.00 each and donating the proceeds to the Post. Thanks Bob.

At the September meeting we will have as our guests the young men that attended this years Boy’s State, please plan on attending as these young men are quite interesting.

The Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a LUAU on August 25 at 1600 here at the post. The cost is $5.00 per person. Shish-Ka-Bobs, fruit, rice etc. will be served. Wear those wild shirts and hula skirts. Come on out and have fun.

We have a new juke box. It was installed earlier this week. There are plenty of songs, as the music is downloaded from the internet Plans are to put speakers in the gameroom and on the deck.

The ALR will be hosting their 1ST annual CAR/MOTORCYCLE/TRUCK show on August 11 at the post. Bring out those old buggies and show them off. Free admission. Trophies will be awarded, food and drinks will be available.
Come out, support your local veterans!

Special thank you to Wayne Reid and James Barkley for their generous contribution to the post. They donated $200.00 to the post as a result of their D-1-4 Reunion held here last weekend. The reunion was a tremendous success and all the hard work and planning on Wayne and James’s behalf paid off.

Once again we (Charles Evans, Gabe Reich and myself) had the priveledge to attend Girl Scout Troop 518 in Archdale’s Awards Banquet. We were presented with 35 milk jugs of “Pop Tops”. This is the 3rd time we have been there in the last year. These young ladies have given us approx. 123 jugs in the last year.

The State Convention was held in June. Unfortunately there were only 2 representatives from our Post and 3 from the Auxiliary. A lot of good information was obtained and we had a good time. PLEASE, let’s try and do better next year attendence wise.

The fish fry was a great success. Approx. 100 lbs of dolphin was cooked and served. Thanks to the guys that donated the fish from last year’s trip to the coast. Look for future events at the post. We are planning on doing some extra events, if you have any ideas, bring them up.

We will be welcoming DELTA COMPANY, 1ST BN, 4TH MARINES, to our post on July 20th to July 22 for their annual reunion. Lets all take part in showing these guys what a great post we have.

We did a lot of research prior to purchasing them and we feel that we have required a good product. Let us know what you think, we are planning on having a couple more installed in the game room.

As mentioned, we now have a wine license. Thus far we only have a couple of wines, White Zinfandel and Chardonnay. If there is enough interest we will see about other selections.

The Sweetheart Dinner and Show was a tremendous success. Not only was the dinner great, (thanks to the helpers) but the show was super. Danny Crouse not only put on a great show but he won a few hearts. Hopefully this will be an annual event. Thank you ROBIN REID for all you do.

Check out the small hall when you get a chance. Anna Dillard, Robin Reid, Becky Collins, Sandra Brown, Sandy Miller, Sherry Sanders and Jennie Evans are the greatest!! These lovely ladies from our Ladies Auxiliary spent a weekend here re-doing the hall. All the organizations that meet at the Post are represented, (placards made by Anna Dillard), new paint job and scheme, new pictures of Aux. presidents and new curtains. You guys are AWESOME!!!!

We are in the process of adding a few improvements to the post. We hope in the next few weeks we will have “smoke eater” equipment installed in the canteen & possibly the game room. We are checking on suppliers and the cost to do this. Also we are looking at obtaining a wine license. Enough interest has been given as to the possibility of us serving wine. We may need some help in the way of contributions to make this become a reality.

Thanks to Harry “Gabe” Reich and Larry Starling for their generous donation's of the grills to the post. Rest assured they will be put to good use.

We Still and Always need hall rental volunteers, this is what is keeping the Post going, with out your help we won’t make it. As always, only a few have volunteered their time. WE NEED HELP !!! If we are to remain successful and want to keep our doors open.
IT’S UP TO YOU!!!!

January 2007

I hope that you all had a great Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas and I want to wish each and everyone a HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PREOPEROUS NEW YEAR.

We had some really great events this year. “Pop Tops” were turned in by various organization and individuals. We gave approx. $1000.00 to Ronald McDonald House. The Marine Corps League collected over 7,000 toys for “Toys for Tots”, the FRA collected can goods for the soup kitchen, ALR had a great, successful run to the VA in Salisbury, the Ladies Auxiliary sent two huge boxes to our troops in Iraq and a large amount of teddy bears went to kids in Iraq. Thanks so much to all for their help and contributions.

Effective 1/1/2007 the price of the Wednesday night dance will go to $7.00. We hate to do this but when electricity and gas to heat this place goes up we have to do something to help pay. Thanks for your understanding.

Lets not forget those that are in need this holiday season. There are boxes in the canteen for the FRA CANNED GOODS, TOY”S FOR TOTS, and the TEDDY BEAR COLLECTION. All is being gathered to help children and the needy. Let us remember those folks not so fortunate and bring out the CHRISTMAS SPIRIT in all of us.

At the November meeting we were honored to have Bob Penn and his wife join us for dinner. Bob is a member of ROLLING THUNDER, a motorcycle group, such as our very own AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS. Their primary function is to publicize the POE/MIA issue. In January our post will have the honor of providing a meeting space for a new ROLLING THUNDER chapter, that will be organized and under the direction of Bob Penn. Welcome ROLLING THUNDER!!

November 2006

The 2nd Annual Halloween Party was a great success and a great time was had by all. Those of you that missed it, missed out on a great time. Most all were dressed up in their costumes and some of their own creation. Where does this imagination come from? Once again, thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary, you guys are great. Where would we be without you?

The 3rd Thursday is our time for BINGO at the Veterans Home in Salisbury. Sign up is in the canteen & we need 3-4 people to help with this. The folks at the home really look forward to having us there and it only takes a couple of hours out of our busy lives.

Check out the big box in the canteen, made possible by Jeff Hufford, Sam & Anna Dillard. The box has containers for gifts to our troops and school supplies. Thanks ALR.
