An A.L.R. Poem
We Ride for our
Freedom, For Vets near and far.
The American Legion
Riders, That's who we are.
Our horses are steel, Our hearts proud and true.
We hold Old Glory
high, For ourselves and for you.
We honor our soldiers that
fight for us daily.
We ask God in His
wisdom to bring them home safely.
We wear patches and
pins and always have a good time.
But when our country
needs us we'll be right there in line.
We are made up of
Veterans, Of Sons, Spouses and Daughters.
The American Legion
Riders, That's who we are.

American Legion Riders-Veterans helping Veterans
August 2007
Here we find ourselves in the middle of Summer and we have been on many rides together. There are so many beautiful and interesting places to ride motorcycles and we find ourselves dreaming of those perfect ride destinations that will be unforgetable memories. We've done several rides in the past couple of years that we'll always remember and cherish and so many more are coming our way. Continue to support your Legion and The Legion Riders for more fun and interesting opportunities that are coming our way.
We have several new members in our ALR and we should welcome them as our new riding brothers and sisters and as American Legion family. Always show love and graditude and hey why not offer a cold drink to the new members.

AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS – POST 55
NEWS & EVENTS
We have accepted several new members into our ALR family in the last month and we would like to say welcome aboard and thank you for your support for what we hope to be the best ALR in NC.
We will soon be celebrating our 2nd full year as an organization and we’ve come a long way.
Thank you for all the support and help in the past year to make this an eventful and prosperous organization. The foundation has been laid, and the building blocks are being put into place and we are now on our way to building a family of friends and an organization of motorcycle riders who care for the veterans, the members and their families.
The ride committee and I have worked hard to make rides that are fun, entertaining and educational. We attempt to make long rides and short rides so everyone can find something that fits their needs. We encourage all members to come to the ride committee meetings and to contact the ride coordinator and committee members to voice your interest for a ride to your favorite places.
We know that everyone can not make every ride but we strive to have rides that everyone can periodically make. Let us know what your interest are. Remember that this is your organization and we need and expect to get your input.
Attention: The May ALR meeting has been moved to Sunday, May 20th @ 4pm
Due to all the Mother’s Day events.
The May 20th meeting will be our nominations and elections day for the ALR.
So, this will be an important meeting to plan for. We will use paper ballots as other auxiliary units have adopted. Please think about who you would like to lead the way as we grow in the coming year. The board positions for elections are (1) Director, (2) Asst. Director, (3) Secretary, (4) Treasurer, (5) Ride Coordinator, (6) 2 elected Road Captains, (7) Chaplain, (8) Historian, (9) Sergeant-at-Arms.
The Director and/or the board may appoint other Ride Captains and Committee Chairs as deemed necessary.
The Ride Coordinator shall be the Lead Road Captain and may give directives to the other Road Captains as necessary for safety and efficiency.
Your Director and Asst. Director would like to step down to allow some new blood and new ideas to come forth that will allow growth and integrity in our organization.
We still love the ALR and are ready to assist and help all the new board members who will be elected this year. We by all means are not turning our backs on you but will actually be able to voice our opinions and vote on issues as a member at large.
We are enthusiastically waiting for ALR members to nominate and run for the many positions on our board. Enjoy and support your ALR organization and Post 55.

PONY EXPRESS
RIDES AGAIN
I received this info from the Post 144 ALR in Belmoint. They are asking for our participation in this historic American Legion Ride which is nation wide and will be covered by most news media. It's called the Pony Express-Legacy Run in August. The National Commander, Tom Bock of the American Legion is requesting that all ALR's participate and promote our organization. I have more details if anyone wants to join me. The time period is August 17-22, 2007.
I plan to at least run part of the NC run. Anyone interested in the cross country ride to the National Convention in Salt Lake City let me know. This sounds like a lot fun and a chance to meet with other ALR groups. So pull your Steel Ponies out of the barn and let's ride for the cause.
More info to Follow. Thanks.

ALR Post 55 News
Our riders have been out enjoying the good warm weather. There have been breakfast rides and birthday rides to The Uwharrie Nat'l Forest and Morrow Mt. St. PK. with stops at some of our favorites- Buddy's & Scooters. If anyone has a favorite ride location please contact me or the ride committee with your details. The ride committee has decided that they will set up the rides as well as times and places. Those that can make it will be there, others can catch the next ride. It has become apparent that they can not please us all-all the time, but can please some of us all the time. If you have a favorite time or place to ride call the committee. Thanks for your understanding of this situation. If you were at the last ALR meeting you will understand this problem.
Ride Committee Co-Chairs:
Ken Lewis: 336-471-9683 Jeff Hufford: 336-575-4402
We have some very nice rides set up for this year and plans are being made for more. Please come to the meetings and share your suggestions with us. We are growing and experiencing some growing pains but adjustments are being made to remedy the problems.
Thanks for your participation and eagerness to help make this the best ALR in the state.
We are all part of this great ALR family and must be willing to put forth a bit of effort and understanding for each other for the good of the whole family.
So----let's go ride the wind-------

that. Maybe one of the middle weekends.
If anyone has a particular ride location to take us on please let myself
or the ride committee know.
Looking forward to a warm Spring and cool Summer ahead. Keep in touch.
Your Colonel, John Collins
January has been cool and a slow month for motorcycle riding. But, never fret because your ALR is planning to ride every Sunday. If the weather is too bad for your scoot then join us in you Cage (car).
The details of each ride may not be made until the meeting time and will be up for discussion. This will give the group an opportunity to get together to eat, socialize and ride. Our ride coordinator, Jeff Hufford (Tea Cup) 336-575-4402 is your contact person for the rides.
Sunday Feb. 11th, 4pm: ALR meeting at the Post.
Monday Feb. 19th, 7pm: Joint Dinner Meeting At the Post.
Sunday Mar. 11th, 4pm: ALR meeting at the Post.
With over 30 members in the ALR it has been decided to use Robert's Rules of Order. It will take us all a while to get the feel for order in place but I think it will actually help save time in our meetings leaving more time for fun.
Without order we are nothing more than a gang. Bare with us as we grow.
The newspaper ran our thank you ad for the Christmas Ride but failed to list the contributors as intended. Hopefully we can do better next year.

We had a most beautiful “Christmas for Veteran’s Ride to Salisbury V.A. Hospital & Care Facility” on Dec. 16th. The temps were in the 60’s and plenty of sunshine to go around. All went well and contributions are still coming in totaling $5500-$6000 last count as well as 3 truck loads of clothing, under garments, toiletries, games, and munchies. Thanks to our local merchants we had auctions of power tools, leather coats etc. and many door prizes. Almost every rider received a door prize. Our grand prize was a weekend at the Embassy Suits. The winner was Randy Lynch of Clemmons, NC.
Thanks to all who participated and special thanks to our Legion Post #55 members who helped get this project of the ground and running smoothly.
We’ve had several rides this month to include Love Valley & The Brushy Mts., Ghost Riders, Morrow Mt. State Park.
Hope to ride on Christmas Eve. If interested call the Colonel.
December has been good to us with above average temperatures for more comfortable riding. Tis’ the season for holiday cheers and remembering our family traditions. I still have my children at home and some of you do as well, not to forget the grand babies too!
We’ve raised our Christmas tree and decorated it and our house in traditional holiday ornaments and colors. It’s a time of excitement and also becomes a worrisome time as well. Shopping in the crowds, maneuvering thru the busy streets and fighting for that close parking spot, beating the rush for that limited items etc. Need I say more. But through this busy season let’s all remember how it is we earned this great freedom to do these wonderful things and can actually afford to do these things. We live in a free America-the greatest country the world has ever known. How is it that we became what we are is how our fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers and our forefathers worked hard and “fought” for what they wanted and believed in. And that was to have our freedoms of thought, freedoms of beliefs, freedoms of movement, freedoms to own and the freedom of choices. My choice this holiday season is to continue to support my president, my country, and my way of life with all the freedoms it allows me to enjoy as the peace of mind and peace of life and most of all to insure that my children and their children and all future generations continue to enjoy the same good life and wonderful freedoms.
Anything less could result in something none of us would want to witness or experience.
Just remember that no matter how bad you think things are—it’s much, much worse in many nations across the world. Why do you think they all strive to come to America!?
Thanks to all who have joined our riders group and supported our causes. Please join us as we finish out our 2nd year of operations as The Post #55 American Legion Riders.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2007
Your ALR Post #55 Director, John Collins (The Colonel)
We've had a great Fall riding season with some of the most beautiful Fall
colors I can remember.
We've celebrated our first year as Post #55 ALR and
grown to about 30 members.
The Ladies Aux. put on a wonderful Halloween
Party with some scary scenes and we had some scary spooks and celebrities.
There was Hugh Hefner, Batman, G.I. Joe, Nurse Nympoe Maniace & her willful
patient, Tea Cup, Vixen, Jungle Woman, One Last Stand, a Couple of Playboy
Bunnies, Bad Bikers(Scary too), Pirate woman, Capt. America and a colorful
and scary array of other costumed guest totaling over 60 party fans. We
played games, danced, mingled, ate and drank and just plain "be merry"!!
Wish you all could have been there. It was the best party I've been to in
many years.
Mark your calendars for next year. You don't want to miss a
thing!! Thanks for the wonderful night you dear Ladies Auxiliary put on.
Speaking of parties, at our next ALR meeting we will be planning our
Christmas Party and our Veterans Charity Christmas Ride to the Salisbury
V..A. Hosp.. We will be planning our future destinations as well. Bring your
ideas and veteran friends and let's enjoy the ride.
Several of our Post 55 American Legion Riders rode with the Patriot Guard
Riders and The Rolling Thunder to Marine Lcpl. Nathan Elrod's funeral in
Rockwell. There were estimated 200-300 riders there and probably 700-800
people. The active duty Marines performed a beautiful Military Honors
Funeral and The Riders lined the walkways with a couple hundred American
Flags.
It was a time for tears and gratitude for this Marine and his friend
and family. Elrod was killed in Iraq.
Next ALR meeting on Sunday, 11/12/06 @ 4:00pm Hope to see ya'all there.
Riding For America,
