"Ongoing Unit 40 Activities"

1. Unit members visit Adopted Veterans in the nursing homes in Chowan County (Britthaven, Chowan Skilled Nursing, Prime Time) for each major holiday.

2. At every Unit Meeting members are given paper and envelopes to write a letter to the troops.

3. Each Unit Member is asked to save any manufacturer coupons, cut them out and pass them in to send to commissaries around the world.

4. Each Unit member is asked to save aluminum pop tops to pass in for Ronald McDonald House.

5. Each Unit Member is asked to save all used ink jet cartridges except Epson and save all old cell phones to turn in for the Solders for Soldiers Program which in turn donates money to the American Legion Legacy Fund (scholarships to all children of service personnel killed in action since 9/11).

6. Our Auxiliary Unit maintains a Bingo Kitchen every Monday night in the back building of the Post Home when they play Bingo sponsored by American Legion Post 40. This is our unit's ongoing moneymaker to pay for our program activities.

Special Projects:

1. Our unit sponsors rising senior girls to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Tarheel Girls State. We also host a Girls State Orientation at our Post Home.

2. Our unit gives a $600.00 Annie Lee Chestnutt Scholarship to a senior high school student each year.

3. Our unit sponsors a school class for the NIE (Newspapers in Education) Program in our county.

4. Our unit helps sponsor Cycle Speedway in our county. This is a bicycling program for children and adults.

5. Our unit sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest in our schools for grades 3 through 12.

6. Our Unit sponsors a Poppy Coloring Contest in our schools for Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade.

7. At Christmas we give Christmas Parties with Santa and Mrs. Claus for the mentally and physically handicapped children in our schools and adults at Life, Inc. in our county.
